A Tribute To Mathew Ngau

A friend, a tutor and a mentor to my son Yohan, master of Sape', bark painter, a warrior dancer, a blowpipe marksman, an excellent wood carver and a great lute maker. We truly adore this man and his tremendous work on art and our culture. Yohan is a big fan of Jerry Kamit who is also a pro Sape' player, since I have his cds and so after learning classical guitar for less than a year when he was 11, he showed interest in Sape'. At that time, the only place that I know of that do sell Sape' was The Artrageously Ong Gallery in Kuching. I walked in one day and looked around for some Sape' and I got hooked up with Mathew. Thank You to him that Yohan's first Sape' performance was during the Rainforest Music World Festival Workshop in 2004 in Sarawak Cultural Village.

Mathew and two of his biggest fan.

Mathew is coming to the United States next month for the Folk Arts Market Cultural Performances. He will be performing in Santa Fe New Mexico, Seattle and San Fransisco but not in Austin though. Too bad! I just hope he could come visit us and through our conversations few days ago, he might be able to.

Care Package Received

Puteri,

ThankYou for the package. My kids and I were excited to see the stuffs inside. As soon as my eldest saw Bak Kut Teh...he asked me if I could make it for lunch. And so I did. It tasted like heaven. Ya know after a couple of months not being able to eat Bak Kut Teh, I was quite pleased.
It was such an ignorant of me not to check at the front office earlier. The package actually arrived here in Austin on the 26th of May. Summer is here so the managament had the front gate closed 24 hours to prevent outsiders coming in and utilise the pools. USPS had to leave the package at the front office. Oh well, at least I took the effort to walk to the front office today.

Whew!! At least I stayed silent this Gawai. I was so depressed that I ignored my blog, my email. I guess I should say I was jealous about the Gawai thingy.

Happy Belated Gawai Dayak to all Dayak bloggers!
